How to Use WinGet to Download Free Software
WinGet is a tool that allows you to install and manage applications in your Windows system. The software is available through the Microsoft Store and can be used from the command line. It can also be programmatically used from Intune or SCCM.
There are two ways to use the package manager: the Command Prompt or the PowerShell interface. When using the Command Prompt, you can browse the applications that are currently installed on your system. You can run commands to find more information on apps that are in the list, or update or remove them.
While the Winget command line tool isn't as simple as installing applications through the Windows store, it does provide an easy way to get an application up to date on your computer. The package manager works automatically and will download and install the needed software.
If you don't want to install the app in the first place, you can use the --silent parameter. This switch will suppress the installer and make the upgrade automatic.
Another option is to use the show command. To find out more about an app, you can type "show" and the application name or the application ID. Once you enter an application name, you will see a brief description of it.
If you prefer to use the PowerShell interface, you can type the following: psutil winget. psutil is a PowerShell command for Windows and enables you to access the WinGet package manager.
